As someone with ADHD (see my ADHD homemaking tips & tricks here) having a schedule and learning time management skills are essential to me as a housewife. However my natural tendency is to rebel against them and avoid them at all costs. Which is not helpful, especially now as a wife, SAHM, homeschool mom, homesteader and entrepreneur. I hope you enjoy my homemaker schedule.
Time is so valuable to me, but somedays I just seem to waste the whole day. Overall, I am fairly certain that I am improving in this but I still have a long way to go. Having a schedule as a homemaker is essential to me right now. Time management is a skill that can be developed and honed.
Homemaker Schedule vs. Homemaker Routine
For me I have both a schedule and a routine. During the school year M-F I have a pretty strict schedule I have to follow in order to get at least most of the work done. However, on the weekends and the summer I have more of a routine than a schedule. Even with a schedule things can still get a little loosy-goosy. Between a baby, toddler and farm animals unexpected interruptions happen all of the time.
I also have a homemaking routine that helps me stay on top of manage my house. My life changes so fast that my homemaking routines and schedule change every few weeks. But I feel that over time I am getting better at homemaking.
2024-2025 School Year Homemaking Schedule
Morning Schedule
I wake up sometime between 5:00-5:30
When I get up I take some of my supplements, drink some water, get dressed, eat a snack and do my animal chores.
7:30 Wake up the girls and make breakfast
7:45 Eat breakfast
8:15 Start morning house chores, each of the girls have their own chores and I wash dishes and clean the kitchen
8:45 Morning exercises, we do these as a family it helps get everyone ready for the school day
9:00-10:00 Hands on school with my girls
10:00 Art/puzzle time. I use this time to switch laundry over or do another quick house project
10:15 Snack / read aloud time. We are currently reading the Latch Valley Farm series and loving them!
10:30 ish (I read two chapters and then move on to the next thing) Laundry/listen to history. For history we are doing the audio book version of The Story Of Civilization. We are really enjoying it and we take care of laundry during this time which is helping me stay on top of it better.
11:00 Handwriting time, not only for the girls but for me as well.
11:15 Playtime for the girls while I get lunch ready
Noon: Lunch/clean up
Afternoon Schedule
1:00-4:00 Nap time. This is for everyone, the only way I can handle getting up as early as I do is if I get a nap.
4:00 Snack time
4:15-6:00 Project time. While the girls play this is my time to get projects done around the house this could be preserving, cleaning, decluttering or working on the computer.
6:00-8:00 Dinner prep, I try to clean as I go but still the kitchen is always a mess when I am done.
8:00-9:00 Dinner
9:00-10:30 My husband puts the girls down for bed and I work on the computer either on the blog or on photos if I have some I need to edit.
10:30 Bedtime!
I currently have a five-month-old daughter so if she is crabby or needs to nurse it can throw off our schedule but I have several areas throughout the day that we can move around to help us keep the day overall on track.
Daily Homemaking Routines
My homemaking routine are what stops me from having to think about every task that I need to complete each day. The downloadable lists above are the goal. I would love to say that I reach those seemingly easy tasks each day and week but that would be a lie.
I spend most of my time pregnant, newly postpartum or having chronic health issues so I am rarely on my A game. This means that at least for now when I only have little ones the house will not be kept as well as I would like.
I can be depressed about this or I can embrace my stage in life and realize that each time other people see my messy house they will either feel better about theirs because of how much cleaner theirs is or because theirs is messy to. Does this mean I don’t try? No, it means I try my best and let God’s grace cover everything else.
As you can see most of my daily homemaking tasks are the basics. Getting dressed, feeding people etc. The daily tasks make the weekly tasks possible. The weekly tasks are what make me feel that I am successful as a homemaker.
Weekly Homemaking Routine
Checking off the weekly homemaking routine items happens throughout the week. Usually during the 4:00-6:00 project time or during the weekend. Mondays we call “clean sheets day”. I do my best to get our sheets changed every Monday so that Monday night we get to climb into our clean fresh sheets such as our American Blossom Linens sheets.
For me the hardest part of my weekly homemaking routine is washing the stove. Even though it is a really easy task, usually the only time I think of it is while I am cooking which means the stove is hot and I can’t safely clean it without burning myself.
