I love books! This list of best classic books for girls are some of my favorites. These are stay up all night and finish the book kind of books.
I have inherited the book worm gene from my mom. Most of my sisters are veracious readers as well, these are some of our favorites. Though many of these are written for pre-teen/teens I still love the read them even now. I think that any truly good story in enjoyable to you for the rest of your life.
Over all my two favorite authors are Louisa Maud Montgomery and Luisa May Alcott. You will see many of their books in the list below and as a general rule I enjoy anything either of them wrote.
Best Classic Books For Girls
Anne Of Green Gables By: Louisa Maud Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables and the other seven books in the series are a wonderful journey of a orphan girl who gets adopted by spinster siblings. Join her on the course of her life from 11 to late 40s.
An Old-Fashioned Girl By: Louisa May Alcott

An Old-Fashioned Girl might just be my favorite book (though that is like choosing a favorite child). There are so many great quotes in this book about true womanhood. Polly the protagonist is beautifully flawed and maybe my favorite part is that everyone ends up marrying exactly who you think they should in the end.
It is a book about growing up and deciding if you are going to mature or stay a child. It is about buckling down and deciding to life’s little duties and choosing joy even amongst trials.
Eight Cousins By: Louisa May Alcott

Eight Cousins is the story of an orphan girl that is raised by her sea-faring uncle. Truely a classic!
Daddy Longlegs By: Jean Webster

When Jerusha Abott gets adopted out of an orphanage at 18 and sent to college she is thrilled. She falls in love with a young uncle of her roommate. But will her guardian approve?
Little Women By: Lousia May Alcott

Little Women might just be the ultimate classic girls book. Follow Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy as they grow up, mature and learn what true love is.
Little House Series By: Laura Ingalls Wilder

My five year-old is currently obsessed with the little house series as I was at her age. These books are wonderful for both boys and girls and men and women.
Sense and Sensibility By: Jane Austin

Sense and Sensibility along with the rest of the Jane Austin novels I would say are best for teenage girls. Jane’s novel should be read yes for the enjoyment of the story but also with a critical eye for what she says about what it means to be a woman and a man. Just try not to think to hard about the whole marrying your cousin thing.
Hedi

Hedi is the story of a little girl, her grandfather and the goatherd. Through love, nature and hard work an invalid girl gets her health back.
Mrs. Piggle Wiggle

Perfect for a pre-teen or as a read aloud (my 5 year-old and 3 year-old love the series). I however still enjoy the Mrs. Piggle Wiggle stories and sometimes get some parenting ideas.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond By: Elizabeth George Speare

The Witch Of Blackbird Pond is I think my sisters favorite book ( it is not about an actual witch or witchcraft). I myself have read it many times (and I don’t like to re-read books). A fascinating historical novel with just the right touch of romance.
Caddie Woodlawn By: Carol Ryrie Brink

Caddie Woodlawn is the story of a strong willed girl as she learn to channel her will to a good cause. She learn to obey her parents and stand up to others when they are wrong.
Calcio Captive By: Elizabeth George Speare

Calico Captive is the story of Mariam Willard. Taken captive from her frontier home and eventually gets her freedom and uses her skills as a seamstress to support herself and her sister. She chooses to marry the good man she loves instead of the flashy “bad boy” who is trying to woo her.
Hannah Fowler By: Janic Holt Giles

Hannah Fowler is the story of a young woman and her farther as they brave the Kentucky wilderness. When her father dies what will become of her?
Cheaper By The Dozen and Bells On Their Toes By: Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey

Cheaper By The Dozen is the true story of the Gilbreth family. Join them for the hilarity, joys and struggles of a large family lead by an even larger father and loving mother.
It is a great list.
I might add:
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
Polyanna by Eleanor H Porter
Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm
I totally agree with you. There are so many it was hard to know where to stop.
