Most taco seasonings bought commercially have msg in them. Both my husband and myself get really bad headaches from msg so we make our own seasoning blend to make sure we avoid it. This recipe is based off the recipe that my mom made when I was growing up. It was such a hit that my one uncle asked for a quart jar of it every year for Christmas. I hope your family will enjoy this msg free taco seasoning recipe with liver powder as much as we do!
Why Make Your Own Taco Seasoing?
We make our own taco seasoning for the cost savings and for the health benefits. We eat tacos once a week and frequently use more than one pound of meat and beans per meal. This means we would go through a lot of packets of seasoning if we did not make our own in bulk.
Making it ourselves means we can make it MSG Free, Gluten Free and corn starch free. I can also add in the liver powder to add that umami flavor that msg adds without any headaches and with added nutrients.
Why Use Liver Powder?
As I mentioned above the liver powder adds umami flavor to the blend. Umami is the fifth flavor we can detect, it is the savory-meaty flavor. Commercially MSG is added to get that flavor, you can get it naturally by using nutrient dense super foods such as nettle or organ meat powder to get the same impact. I am still learning to like the taste of liver so adding it to seasonings are a great way to me and my family eating it without actually tasting it.
Do I Have to Include the Liver Powder If I Don’t Want To?
No. If you leave out the liver powder it will still taste great.
Can I Leave Out the Sugar in the Recipe?
Yes you can, it will change the flavor profile some but go ahead if it is important to you.
Can I Leave Out the Starch in the Recipe?
Yes you can however the msg free taco seasoning recipe will not coat the meat like it does with the starch in it.
How Long Does It Keep For?
By using fresh seasonings and herbs and they are kept dry and stored in a dark place it should last for up to a year. After a year as long as it has been kept dry it will still be good but it will have lost some of its potency.
Tips and Tricks
- Make it in bulk, this time I made it with an 1/8 cup measuring cup. This made enough to fill my glass square seasoning jar and an old salsa jar that I use for food storage. If you want a smaller amount us a teaspoon or a tablespoon and go from there.
- Get these square glass jars to keep your homemade seasoning recipes in. I love them so much that I have to sets of them!
- This makes a great gift, put it in one of the glass jars or use one of these cut sealable bags to package it.
