Though I am tall (5’10″ish) I am just barely tall. This means I need to buy tall jeans to get them to fit right but, they are usually a little long on me. Back when I was wearing heels more it wasn’t a big deal. Now I the tallest heel I wear is two inches which doesn’t really affect the length of my pants much.

I have had these jeans for almost three years but due to pregnancies haven’t been wearing them for the whole time. I should have hemmed them when I got them, but I didn’t and now they are in bad shape. So I though I would show you how to hem jeans easily and quickly.

Will They Have The Same Hem?

Nope. If you want to keep the same hem there are lots of other tutorials online for that. I don’t care that it is not the original hemlines because my jeans are not that fancy.

Yes for this tutorial.

How Do I Figure Out Where The New Hem Should Be?

For me it is easy I just cut off where I wore it out by walking on it. However if you are doing this before your jeans look horrible you can measure this yourself or have someone help you. If you are doing this yourself, cuff up your jeans as far as you think you want them and try them on with the shoes you will be wearing them with. Adjust your cuff until you like it and then pin it that way. Make sure both legs are even.

If you have someone to help you put the jeans on and the shoes you will wear them with. Have your helper use either pins or chalk to mark where you want your jeans to end at. Once you have it marked where you want the jeans to end, measure down 1/2″ and make another mark. This is where you will cut your jeans at.

Once you determine the where you want the hem to be and measure down 1/2″ mark it and cut off the remaining fabric. Unless you have super heavy-duty fabric shears just use whatever decently sharp heavy duty scissors you have on hand.

Once you have your pant leg cut choose either thread that matches your jeans or matches the thread used on your jeans. I chose to match the fabric on my jeans so that it just blends in. Sew a zigzag on the cut edge. This will prevent fraying form happening over the course of time. Be very careful when sewing over the seams as they are very thick.

Fold up your jeans the 1/2″ and pin and iron. Switch to a straight stich on your machine and straight stich 1/4″-3/8″ from the folded edge. I didn’t sew over the inseam seam since it was so bulky. Remember to back stitch at the beginning and the end of each seam.
