This peanut butter protein ball recipe is by far my family’s favorite snack that I make. The hardest thing about making these is making them last for longer than 15 minutes after your family realizes you have made another batch!
These make a great activity/snack for my girls. If I have time I will give each of my three older girls (4 1/2, 3 and 2) a bowl with some of the mixture in it. They love to make their own protein balls and it keeps them busy for a while.
Why Should I Make The Peanut Butter Protein Ball Recipe?
I am always on the look out for easy to make healthy snacks for my kiddos and my hubby. I don’t want to feed them straight carbs but I also want something that they will like. These peanut butter protein balls fit the bill!
Especially in the summer I don’t want to have to fire up the oven all of the time to make snacks when the house is already hot. These are great stored in the refrigerator to grab quickly when we all get in from working on the garden and there is no food ready.
Are These Gluten Free?
Yes as long as you use gluten free rolled oats. If you are making these gluten free also make sure your other ingredients haven’t been contaminated with gluten.
Can I Make These With Quick Oats?
Technically yes. I find that the texture is not nearly as good as when using rolled oats though.
Can I Leave Out The Chocolate Chips?
Yes, but why? I think the chocolate chips are the best part. However if you want to leave them out feel free. You can add another 1/2 cup of dried fruit instead if you wish.
Can I Reduce The Honey In The Recipe?
Kind of. You can reduce it by up to half but you will have a really hard time getting them to stay together especially once they have been bitten into. If you are going to reduce the honey I recommend adding in more coconut oil to help them hold together better.
Can I Use Maple Syrup In These Peanut Butter Ball Recipe?
Yes you can switch out up to half of the honey for maple syrup. Honey holds the balls together better than maple syrup so if you switch out all of it for maple syrup they will not hold together very well.
Can I Use Almond or Sunflower Butter in this Recipe?
Absolutely! I have made them with almond butter and I actually like them better that way. However if you are making them for someone with a peanut butter allergy, make sure none of your ingredients are contaminated with peanut butter.
Why Do These Not Have Protein Powder In Them?
I have yet to find a protein powder that I like. All most all of them are made from soy. They are also highly processed and frequently full of fillers and additives that I don’t want in me or my family.
Can I Leave Out the Vanilla Powder
Yes but the flavor won’t be as good.
Does Other Dried Fruit Work Just As Well?
Yes as long as it is the same size. Raisins and dried cherries work great because they are the same size. Larger dried fruit can be chopped up small and then added.
Do These Protein Balls Need To Be Stored In The Refrigerator?
Yes and No. Short term they can be stored on the counter as long as it is not too hot. But if you are planning on them lasting more than a few days store them in the refrigerator.
Does This Peanut Butter Protein Ball Recipe Freeze Well?
Yes! In fact if I want them to last for more than a day I have to freeze most of them. They freeze well for up to six months. This frozen peanut butter protein ball recipe is a perfect snack for summer, just pull them out of the freezer and start eating them frozen for a nice cold snack.
