I love having something that is both beautiful and practical in my kitchen and this vintage style hanging towel pattern fits the bill! These are great to make in different colors and patterns to match the season and your mood. I hope to make several of these over the next few months.
Perfect for hanging off the handle of your stove or refrigerator. A hanging towel instantly adds vintage style to your kitchen. Great stash buster project! You can make this with a fat quarter and have extra left over.
Do I need to use birdseye cotton fabric?
No instead you could use a flour sack towel. I prefer the birdseye fabric because it is more absorbent and softer. Also it allows you to make it any size you want.
How Difficult is it to Make?
This is a great beginner project. The only complicated part is the button hole.
Can I Still Make This If I Don’t Have a Button Hole Foot?
Yes. I have made several of these hanging towels and I have used the button hole foot, done it by hand and free-handed it on the machine. For this one I free-handed it on the machine.
Do I Need to Use Interfacing on this Project?
Only if you want to. I find that as long as I am using a good quality quilting cotton I don’t need it.

How to Make a Vintage Style Hanging Towel
Cut out the birdseye cotton fabric. I made mine with a 19″x25″ rectangle. This makes a long towel, if you want shorter I would suggest 19″x19″.

Fold over the edges 1/4″ twice and iron.
Sew along three of the sides.

Sew a gathering stich (a long stich that you don’t tack and the beginning and end) across the top.
Gather until it will fit into the hanging part.

Place hanging towel free pattern on your fat quarter and cut out two of them.

With right sides together sew along the edges and turn right side out. Using a small paint brush handle to push out the corners.
Iron it flat. Turn the bottom edge under twice to make a neat edge. Iron again.

Place the gathered towel into the hanging part and pin if necessary.

Sew along the edge. This can be a bit tricky to get both sides of the hanging part and the towel all at once. You could also do this step by hand. Or do as I did and fix the part you messed up by hand.
Make you button hole at the top of the strap. Make sure it is the correct size for your button. Sew your button on and you are almost done.

Double check that all of your stitching looks good and trim any loose threads. Congratulations! You just made a vintage style hanging towel.
